Sedation Dentistry

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

Adults who have:
  • fear of visiting the dentist
  • had traumatic dental experiences
  • difficulty getting numb
  • who gag easily
  • very sensitive teeth
  • complex dental problems that require lengthy appointments
Adults who:
  • hate needles
  • hate the noises, smells and tastes associated with the dental office
  • are afraid and embarrassed about their teeth

For these patients, we offer oral sedation or laughing gas to help them relax for the dental procedure.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation:

Nitrous oxide sedation is also known as “laughing gas”. It is a safe and effective sedative that is mixed with oxygen. It is inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help make you more comfortable during certain procedures. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests given to you by our dentists. Nitrous oxide is designed to make you feel calm and comfortable, with the effects wearing off soon after the mask is removed, allowing you to drive home straight after the procedure. Oral Sedation:

Oral sedation involves a medication called Temazepam (a relative to Valium), that is taken at our dental office 1 hour prior to your dental appointment. Temazepam will quiet your mind and reduce your stress before and during your dental procedure.

Patients who choose oral sedation will usually drift in and out of sleep and are able to wake up in order to respond to the dentist’s questions and commands. At the same time, they feel completely worry-free.

Oral sedation takes a few hours to wear off. You will need a driver to take you home after the procedure.

Oral sedation is a safe and effective way to help patients relax. Just by taking the sedative orally one hour prior to their dental treatment, patients will have a more comfortable experience in the dental chair.
